Description
Compression Stockings are also commonly known as compression socks.
Applications
They are specially designed garments that apply controlled pressure to the legs and feet to improve circulation.
They help prevent or manage conditions such as:
- varicose veins,
- deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and
- swelling due to poor circulation.
The primary function of compression stockings is to promote blood flow by applying pressure to the veins. This pressure helps to reduce the diameter of distended veins and enhance the efficiency of the venous valves. These work to push blood back toward the heart. Achieving this improved circulation can alleviate symptoms like pain, swelling and fatigue in the legs. They are often recommended for people who stand or sit for prolonged periods, pregnant women, and individuals with a history of blood clots or other circulatory issues.
In addition to their medical benefits, compression stockings are increasingly popular among athletes. Many athletes wear them during or after physical activity to reduce muscle soreness and speed up recovery. The stockings help to: reduce the buildup of lactic acid in the muscles, enhance blood flow, and promote faster healing after intense workouts or races.
Variations of Compression Stockings
Depending on the severity of the condition being treated, they come in various compression levels, ranging from mild to strong.
The sizes available include: small, medium, large and extra large (xl, xxl and xxxl). These different sizes are based on specific measurement areas from the thigh to the ankles.
They also come in different styles like: knee-high, thigh-high and pantyhose options.
Materials:
Made of spandex and nylon, they ensure the right level of compression and comfort.
Contraindications for using Compression Stockings:
Do not use compression stockings in the following situations:
- infectious skin diseases
- local skin damage (boils, abscess, ulcer)
- severe cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases
- allergic to the materials they are made of
Washing and Storage:
- Hand wash them with neutral detergent.
- Do not bleach.
- Do not dry clean.
